Creating Surface Texture in a Landscape Painting

The creation of texture in my paintings is a critical component of the work and I strive to achieve a rich and tactile surface. This is a close up detail of my painting 'Residual Cross' and you can see the patina and pronounced etching of the paint surface. Multiple layers of oil paint, cold wax and plaster have been applied using a variety of implements including palette knives, modelling tools and card. Scoring through and partially erasing earlier layers is a key component of my approach to painting and is clearly evident in this work.
