The Edinburgh Art Fair is one of Scotland's most significant annual celebrations of contemporary art, bringing together galleries, collectors, and artists from across the UK and beyond. Held at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange, the fair offers an exceptional opportunity to encounter a wide range of original works in an accessible and welcoming setting.

The Exhibition

In November 2022 I exhibited new work at the Edinburgh Art Fair. The fair ran from 18th to 20th November at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange — a venue that lends itself well to the display of contemporary painting, with its generous proportions and excellent light.

The selection of works on show reflected my ongoing engagement with landscape as subject and material — paintings developed through the layering and reworking of oil and cold wax, exploring the tension between representation and abstraction. The forest, the fen, and the open horizon remain recurring presences in my practice, each offering a different quality of light and atmosphere.

The Work on Show

The paintings exhibited at Edinburgh were drawn from recent studio work, each exploring the physical and expressive possibilities of oil combined with cold wax medium. The process involves building up layers of paint and wax, then scraping back, incising, and reworking the surface to reveal depth and texture. The result is a surface that holds both the history of its making and the presence of the landscape it evokes.

Working at this scale allows for a directness of gesture that smaller formats do not permit. The arm and body become part of the mark-making process, and the energy of that physical engagement is preserved in the dried surface of the paint. These are not transcriptions of observed scenes but responses to landscape — to memory, atmosphere, and the quality of light at particular moments.

About the Edinburgh Art Fair

The Edinburgh Art Fair is a well-established fixture in the British art calendar, attracting visitors from across Scotland and further afield. It provides a rare opportunity to view and engage with a broad range of contemporary work in a single venue, and to speak directly with the artists and galleries presenting it. Edinburgh — with its remarkable cultural heritage and engaged art-going public — makes for a particularly rewarding context in which to show new paintings.
