Forest Paintings at the Affordable Art Fair, Battersea — Autumn 2026
This October I'll be showing a selection of forest paintings with DNG Contemporary — exhibiting under their fair name, Linton 59 — at the Affordable Art Fair, Battersea Autumn, running 14–18 October 2026 in Battersea Park, London. Among the works on the stand is a recent piece, Sylvan Harmony, 120 x 100 x 4 cm, oil and cold wax on canvas.
Sylvan Harmony continues a body of work built around a single, deliberately restrictive idea: a forest interior with no horizon and no ground plane, so there is no point in the composition where the eye can exit the grove. The birch trunks run the full height of the canvas, and the space between them is worked as densely as the trunks themselves — there is no passage of "empty" canvas anywhere in the painting.
The close-up detail shown here gives a clearer sense of how the surface is actually built. Working in oil and cold wax, I apply and remove paint in successive layers, so that colour from earlier stages remains visible beneath, and in places breaks through, the final layer. Up close, the painting reads less as a picture of trees than as a dense, worked surface — closer to geology than illustration. Standing back, that same surface resolves into the birch grove.
This method comes directly from how the paintings are made: worked from sustained physical presence in the landscape rather than from photographs, over what is now close to fifty years of painting practice. The aim isn't to record a view but to register what it feels like to stand inside a wood — enclosed, without a clear sightline out, with only the light behind the tree tops suggesting there's a landscape beyond.
