Visiting the North of England
The North is a different country, it always has been and it probably always will be. I recently spent two weeks visiting the town of Lancaster in the North of England, and after the flat horizons of the Cambridgeshire Fenlands, the landscape surrounding Morecambe Bay is a revelation. You might think all this is new to me, but it isn't, Lancashire is my county of birth and Preston is my hometown. I know this South Lakes area extremely well. Yet the landscape here, particularly as you travel North of Lancaster is more purposeful and dramatic, the contrast with Cambridgeshire is inescapable and exhilarating.
Whilst walking along a bridleway I saw this group of trees hugging the horizon line, just off the road between the village of Nether Kellet and Carnforth. The trees were gently climbing the hill in single file. This is no more than a precursor to the mountains of Cumbria and here you can see the beginnings of the limestone formations that eventually rise to the magnificent peaks of Ska Fell and Old Man Coniston.
The medium I have used is oil paint & cold wax which allows me to create a relatively heavy textured surface. It also dries quickly and encourages layering and a swift method of working. Brayers have been employed to establish the underpainting and to build low relief areas. At a later stage, as the wax begins to set, the impasto surface can be etched and readily carved with a variety of tools. Here I have used bamboo sticks, knives, and crumpled tin foil. After a few days, it is possible to stain and fill the etched lines with a mixture of darker pigment, wax, and linseed oil.
With landscape, I am always alert to the danger of producing an image that is far too picturesque and saccharine. Unfortunately, the sheer beauty of a particular location can often lead us in that direction. Finding a balance between the aesthetic charm of a scene and the immediate visceral reality of the natural world is a never-ending challenge with landscape painting. I will leave you to judge whether I have been successful in navigating this tightrope.
